(a) The articular cartilage from the sham-control rats showed normal histology with a smooth cartilage surface and regular arrangement of the chondrocytes. (b) Experimentally induced cartilage degeneration with fibrillation, cleft formation, and matrix degeneration in the ACLX+NS rats was identified clearly. (c) The articular cartilage from the ACLX+HA rats demonstrated mildly rough surface and focal matrix degeneration.
