1 WWI: The Eastern Front

2 A Two Front War The Schlieffen Plan did not work out for the Germans and they ended up fighting a 2-front war. The battlefield along the German/Russian border was known as the Eastern Front. Russian and Serbs vs. Germans, Austrians & Turks The Eastern front was mobile- tanks and planes were used to fight.

4 Russia Loses Strength Although the Eastern Front was equally matched at times, the Central Powers seemed to gain the advantage. By 1916, Russia was near defeat because they had not fully industrialized and relied on supplies from the Allies. The Germans and Turks blocked supply routes to Russia. Russia’s large population helped to rebuild troop losses and forced the Germans to fight a 2 front war.

6 Truly a World War The war spread beyond the Eastern and Western Fronts and into the colonies. British and French- Recruited colonial subjects in Asia and Africa to fight
