1 Identifying Elements by Color
SpectRoscopy Identifying Elements by Color

2 Periodic Table: To Date
Atomic Number – and Atomic Mass Increase left to right

3 Periodic Table: To Date
Etc. Electrons in Valence Shell Defines Chemical Properties

4 Periodic Table: Today Electrons in ALL Shells
Defines Chemical Properties

5 Element Identification: Emitted Light
Each element emits a characteristic pattern of bands of light. These patterns of bands are used to identify the elements

6 Emitted Light: Why? Electrons around an atom can be found in different “shells” Each shell has its own energy level Close to the nucleus = low energy Far from nucleus = high

7 Emitted Light: More… When “energized” electrons can jump up to higher energy level shells When they move back down they give off some energy as light

8 Emitted Light: More… Low energy light waves =
long wave lengths = close to nucleus High energy light waves = short wave lengths = farther from nucleus

9 Emitted Light: Colors! Let’s EXPLORE!!
Different wavelengths make different colors ! Let’s EXPLORE!!
