Raise awareness of new resources now available

3 Equally Well? (2008) “In Scotland we can point to good progress in the quality of our health care and in major indications of health outcomes, notably record survival rates from the major “killer diseases” such as cancer. This progress is not being experienced by everyone yet”. “Health inequalities……….remain our major challenge” (A. Salmond 2008) Recommendation No 52: NHS Boards should target health promotion & health improvement action better for people with learning disabilities and others who may need support with access to information in line with statutory disability requirements Scottish Government requested proposals from each NHS Board’s Adult Learning Disability Service Mrs Serrels completed a proposal

4 Why? Cancer Incidence is rising in the learning disability population Tuffrey-Wijne et al (2009) Uptake of national screening programmes lower than general populations Cervical Smear Test 19% vs 77% Djuretic et al (1999) Mammography 33% Davies & Duff (2001) Bowel Screening Programme (no stats available)

5 Reason’s for low uptake?
Lack of patient information available in easy read format e.g. Invitation letter, health promotion leaflets Health professionals make assumptions: e.g. women with learning disabilities don’t have sex Investigatory Procedures – non compliant Reliance on family/carers to ensure attendance at appointments QIS (2006) DDA (1995) Human Rights (2008)
