This is where you need to capture the students’ attention
You need to give students something to think about
Try to connect the concepts to their everyday lives .. Why do they need to study/know this?

8. The Explore Phase Accomplished through:
Gives students a chance to investigate the topic by:
Observing
Analyzing
Hypothesizing
Constructing
Organizing

9. The Explain Phase
This is your traditional teaching phase.
Concepts and new terminology are presented
Teacher assesses this phase of learning usually through teacher questioning or a scaffolding activity

10. The Elaborate Phase This is where students apply their new knowledge
Accomplished through:
Compare and contrast activities
Hypothetical situations – not identical
This is Distance Transfer of Learning
This is where students apply their new knowledge
The knowledge must be extended into new situations

11. The Evaluate Phase Includes both Formative and Summative Assessment.
Evaluations should include questions relating to the aspects learned through the process.
Information gathered from the elaborate and extend phases should be used as part of the evaluation phase … it is an assessment!

In the Classroom, this is often given as “extra credit” to challenge your “gifted students”
