1 The 7Es Model of Instruction
This model emphasizes the “transfer of learning” and the importance of eliciting prior understanding

2 7E’s of the Learning Cycle
Developed by Arthur Eisenkraft Taken from The Science Teacher – 2003; The National association of Science Teachers

3 The Elicit Phase Formative Assessment
As the teacher, you need to know what knowledge students have…. important for the Transfer of Learning Students construct knowledge from existing knowledge Identify and clear up any misconceptions Formative Assessment

4 The Elicit Phase Key: Teacher Questioning Introduce topic/task
Activate prior learning Set the stage for your transition into the Engage phase What Can You Do ? Read a paragraph Show a video clip Give them a diagram/picture present them with a problem Class demonstration Key: Teacher Questioning

5 The Engage Phase This is Your “hook”
This is where you need to capture the students’ attention You need to give students something to think about Try to connect the concepts to their everyday lives .. Why do they need to study/know this? This is Your “hook”

6 The Engage Phase What do you think about this?
What do you want to know? What would you like to do? What do you know?

7

8 The Explore Phase Accomplished through:
Gives students a chance to investigate the topic by: Observing Analyzing Hypothesizing Constructing Organizing Accomplished through: Teacher Demonstrations Teacher questioning Reading activities Internet searches

9 The Explain Phase This is your traditional teaching phase. Concepts and new terminology are presented Teacher assesses this phase of learning usually through teacher questioning or a scaffolding activity

10 The Elaborate Phase This is where students apply their new knowledge
Accomplished through: Compare and contrast activities Hypothetical situations – not identical This is Distance Transfer of Learning This is where students apply their new knowledge The knowledge must be extended into new situations

11 The Evaluate Phase Includes both Formative and Summative Assessment.
Evaluations should include questions relating to the aspects learned through the process. Information gathered from the elaborate and extend phases should be used as part of the evaluation phase … it is an assessment! Includes both Formative and Summative Assessment. Formative Assessments should be used all phase of the cycle

12 All students should be challenged
The Extend Phase Is a continuation of the Elaborate phase … applying knowledge to new and different situations In the Classroom, this is often given as “extra credit” to challenge your “gifted students” All students should be challenged
