Outcome: Students know that a function assigns to each input exactly ONE output.

4 Module 5 Vocabulary Draw this function machine in your notes. Make it big enough to add definitions for the three words. When you see f(x) you read this as “function of x”. Right now we use “y”.

5 Module 5 Vocabulary Input: The values of the domain of a function. Often represented by “x”. Example: time Output: The set of results obtained by applying a function rule to a set of input values. Often represented by “y” or “f(x)”. Example: distance Function: (also called “formula or equation representation”) A rule or predictive relationship that assigns to each input (x) EXACTLY one output (y) or f(x). Usually represented by tables, formula, equation, graph, or as a verbal description.

6 Module 5 Vocabulary Discrete rate: Allows the x-values to be only certain points in the interval, usually only integers or whole numbers. It can be counted. Example: The number of people in your class (no fractional parts of a person) or the cost of a book Continuous rate: Allows the x-values to be ANY points in the interval, including fractions, decimals, and irrational values. It needs a measuring device. Examples: The speed of a car on I-12, the outdoor temperature at noon, or time to complete a task.

7 M5L2 Notes A function assigns to each input exactly one output.
Not every function can be expressed by a rule or formula. The rule or formula can be a description of the assignment. Functions have limitations with respect to the situation they describe. For instance, determining the distance a stone drops in -2 seconds.

8 Take a look: Compare the two tables (function machines)
Predict the distance the stone travels in 1 second from the table on the left. Now predict the distance the stone travels in 1 second from the table on the right. Which table allows a more accurate prediction?
