5 What are the Key Stage 1 SATs tests?
Statutory Assessment Tests Designed to test children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in English and Mathematics Provide information about the standards of attainment expected at the end of Key Stage 1 The tests are used to support Teacher Assessment of your child’s standard of attainment

6 What will my child be tested on?
Reading comprehension: two papers Maths: One arithmetic paper; one reasoning paper SPAG: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Writing will be assessed through teacher assessment Throughout the year we assess the children’s writing on a regular basis. Writing is assessed through all genre types. Writing checklist help children to know what they need to include in their writing. Using targets at home to continue to support

7 When/ Where are the tests administered?
All the tests will be taken in pupils’ classrooms Some in smaller groups All children will hear the Maths reasoning paper read aloud. This will be to ensure that the pupils’ mathematical ability is being tested, not their reading of English Tests to be taken during May. St Ethelbert’s pupils will take theirs during the week beginning 7th May Pupils cannot be away or off sick unless serious illness

8 How are the tests administered?
Test papers are not seen by school staff prior to the test Pupils take the tests in classrooms Children have to work independently and unaided Questions in numeracy test may be read out to an individual pupil. There are suggested timings for the tests, but teachers are able to use professional judgement. Tests not strictly timed.

9 Receiving and interpreting results
Tests are marked by teachers and “scaled scores” will be generated. These are used in conjunction with evidence in books to agree attainment levels for pupils. A score of 100 is said to be ‘at expectation’ Shared with pupils and parents via the end of year school report and consultation meetings Child will achieve a judgement of: Working below expected standard Working at expected standard Working at greater depth within the expected standard

10 How are we preparing the children in school?
Pupil attainment at the end of KS1 is based on teacher assessment, using tests as additional evidence Usual timetable continues Set for maths to build and target the foundation skills Three reading/phonics groups to focus on vocabulary development/question technique/reading a range of texts Additional resources purchased to support teaching of grammar Weekly spelling tests following National Curriculum objectives Practise tests Additional homework

11 Additional support at home…
Homework should be completed together and encourage pupils using positive praise When reading ask questions: What could happen next? Why? Summarise the book. Book review. Use targets when completing homework CGP books could be purchased- WH Smith, Amazon Practise tests and questions all online- last years test! Build a love for reading- Read to your child, encourage them to read more books rather than always school reader. Books as rewards and praise Talk about school- We DO do a lot!

16 During the week of the tests
Holidays should not be taken during the “run-up” to SATs or during the SATs week Unless absolutely unavoidable, children should be in school- tests can be caught up at a later time during May but this is unsettling for your child Be positive! Children shouldn’t feel worried or anxious, but they need to understand that the tests are important as they help support our teacher assessments Make sure children have enough sleep, a good breakfast and plenty of water to drink Life should carry on as normal

17 Questions? Always here for extra support and questions! 
