1 Percents and Proportions Unit Day One, Two and Three
Lesson Objective: You will convert between fractions, decimals, and percents and estimate percents using double number lines with a partner. Essential Questions: How are percents used in sports, advertising, etc.? Why would you need to estimate percents? Vocabulary: Percent - A ratio that compares a number to 100 Complete: Warm-up – Have out HW ready to check CW: Review of Percents HW: WKSH Percent of a Number Word Problems

2 Practice Problem Day Two
Work in your group to answer the following question: Weston High School is putting on a play. They have the following expenses: Costumes: $962 Scenery: $546 Props: $624 Lighting: $182 Advertising: $156 Miscellaneous: $130 The principal wants to know what percent of their total expenses were spent on each item. Find their total expenses and tell what percent was spent on each item. (Adapted from MathScape: Blue "Buyer Beware" Lesson 10) Watch Giant Panda Power Point

3 Percents and Proportions Day 4
Common Core Objectives: 7.EE.3 Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole number, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. 7.RP.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. MP.1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. MP.4 Model with mathematics. MP.6 Attend to precision. Class Objectives: You will demonstrate an understanding of percents (decimals and fractions, too) by correcting your homework for a quiz grade. Warm-up: Copy the following vocabulary into your notebook Tax - A percent of the cost of an item, which is charged by governments to raise money Tip - The amount of money added to a bill for service; usually a percent of the bill Commission - Pay that is equal to a percent of sales Mark-Up/Mark-Downs - Added cost of merchandise to arrive at the selling price of an item Discount - The amount by which a price is decreased Have out homework to go over. Corrections to homework and your homework sheet will be collected for a quiz and homework grade.

4 Percents and Proportions Day 5
Lesson Objective: You will solve multi-step percent problems using tape diagrams with a partner. Vocabulary: Tax - A percent of the cost of an item, which is charged by governments to raise money Tip - The amount of money added to a bill for service; usually a percent of the bill Commission - Pay that is equal to a percent of sales Mark-Up/Mark-Downs - Added cost of merchandise to arrive at the selling price of an item Discount - The amount by which a price is decreased Warm-up: You decide to buy a new stereo for $ The store is running a sale and all stereos are 15 % off. What is the price of the stereo after the discount? How is percent used with tax, tip, commission, and mark-ups and mark-downs? 3. Copy Vocabulary into your notebook. CW: Using Tape Diagrams Worksheet HW: Using Tape Diagrams Worksheet

5 Common Core/Essential Standards:
7.EE.3 Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole number, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. MP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MP.3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. MP.4 Model with mathematics.

6 Percents Day 6 Objective: You will demonstrate your understanding of percents by using Tape Diagrams and Double Number Line Graphs on a quiz. CW: go over homework and quiz HW: study Quiz Directions: You must complete 2 Double Number Line Graphs and 2 Tape Diagrams. You must work the entire time. Additional problems completed will count as bonuses but are not optional.
