2 Europeans Explore the East
The main reason for European Exploration was new sources of wealth Bartolomeu Dias (a Portuguese explorer) explained his motives to explore as “to serve God and His Majesty, to give light to those who were in darkness and to grow rich as all men desire” Prince Henry had dreams of exploration overseas beginning in 1415, when he helped conquer the Muslim City of Cueta. In 1498, Vasco De Gama reached the port of Calicut. They found spices, rare silks, and gems.

In 1419 , Henry found a navigation school in which scientists, map makers, instrument makers, and ship makers would gather to perfect their trade. Within years, Portuguese ships began coming down the Western Coast of Africa. When Prince Henry died in 1460, the Portuguese established a series of trading posts along the shores of Africa. They traded gold and ivory.

Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas, in which they agreed to honor the line of Demarcation. In 1498, Vasco Da Gama reached the port of Calicut In 1521, a Spanish expedition was led by Ferdinand Magellan had arrived in the Philippines Beginning in 1600, the English and Dutch began to challenge Portugal’s dominance over the Indian Ocean trade.

Under the Ming Dynasty ( ) China had become the the dominant power in the region. Hongwu , the son of a peasant, commanded the rebel army that drove the Mongols out of China. Hongwu was the first Ming emperor and brought stability to ancient China. Hongwu’s agricultural reforms increased rice production and improved irrigation. He also encouraged the introduction of fish farming and the irrigation. Hongwu’s death in 1398 led to a power struggle.His son Yonglo emerged victories from this struggle.

Kangxi became emperor in 1661 and ruled for some 60. Kangxi grandson Qian-long , who ruled from 1736 to 1795 , china reached its greatest size and prosperity . Great britain also wanted to increase trade with china By 1800 , tea would make up 80 percent of shipments to europe

Most chinese families farmed the land . Drama was popular entertainment ,especially in rural china,where literacy rates were low The culture of early modern china was based mainly on traditional forms Most artists of the time painted in traditional styles , which valued techniques over creativity

8 Japan Limits Western Contacts
Oda Nobunaga defeated his rivals and seized Kyoto in 1568. Toyotomi Hideyoshi continued to set out to destroy the daimyos, after the last general had turned on Nobunaga. Tokugawa Jeyasu founded the Tokugawa Shogunate, or administration, which would continue until The Japanese high society is the emperor held highest rank in society but had no political power. The Daimyo is large landowners and the Shogun is the actual ruler the Samurai is the warriors for them.

Townspeople attended kabuki theater where actors in elaborate costumes, using music, dance, and mime to perform skits about modern urban life. The people also read haiku, poetry which does not express ideas, but presents images The paintings they enjoyed were often woodblock prints showing sophisticated city life. Japan welcomed traders and missionaries, who introduced new ideas.

The europeans began coming to Japan in the 16th century, during a time of severe disorder. At first, the Japanese were curious about the newcomers, eventually letting them in. The Japanese first encountered Europeans in 1543. By the mid-1700’s, Japan began to shift from a rural to urban society Edo was a small town that started in 1600 and grew to one of the largest cities in the world.
