1 From Modular to Linear teaching
A level teaching has been modular for 20 years. Colleagues with experience of being taught linear A levels themselves have to be middle aged! Middle Leaders from Science & History talk about their experiences in the first year of linear teaching. Please sit at the table with your subject name on it. Phase 1, 2 or 3

2 Overview A short summary of the changes
What has changed and what is our situation? What has been the immediate impact on teaching? What are the long term strategies we are employing?

4 What is your situation? Survey www.kahoot.it
Do you teach a Phase 1, 2 or 3 subject? What is your preference? Do you expect the changes to have an impact on your teaching?

5 What is the difference between modular and linear teaching?
Phase 1 table – what have you experienced? Phase 2 and 3 – what do you anticipate will change?

6 What is the difference?

7 Examination and resits

8 Science in St Angela’s Started new course in September 2015 (First wave) In all three Sciences all students are sitting the AS level exams, 2016 First A level results 2017 Changes to each course with regards to practical work, assessment, mathematical skills and content. For example, there is no longer any coursework and assessment will be solely by exam AS level exams look similar to the old exam, Unit 1 and Unit 2 A level exams will be structured differently, 3 exam papers including a ‘practical’ paper and two exam papers that cover half of A level content and some AS content.

9 What has changed so far…
In Science In the first year there has not been a significant change in our delivery of content due to the nature of the AS exams However we are planning for Year 2 and have many plans and strategies in place In History

10 What immediate changes have you observed or do you expect?

11 Long term strategies Revisiting Year 1 material during year 2 is essential Revision – planning to allow more time for consolidation and exam practice Flipped learning – If students complete more content at home that focuses on AO1 (know) then there will be an increased focus on AO2 (apply) and AO3 (Understand, interpret, evaluate)

12 Revisiting Need to test little and often to refresh knowledge taught in Year 1 Quizlet

13 Revisiting plan Planned revision schedule for students to guide their revision of Year 1 material while learning Year 2 material Dedicating one hour per week to revisiting year 1 material using different resources and activities They prepare/revise the material at home Quick quiz to test content (AO1) at start of lesson New activities to reinforce understanding (AO2 and AO3)

14 Revision Plan for time to practice applying all knowledge to exam questions (gained time from loss of coursework element) Focus on exam skills

15 Flipped learning

16 Tweet @StAngelasVI or write a reminder/note in your phone
Write down what you plan to do to as you prepare for teaching in the new system
