1 Disability Awareness Display at start of day
After taking attendance explain to the class today they will be learning about a variety of disabilities and what it can feel like to have these disabilities. Remind them to be respectful throughout the day as this can be a sensitive subject for some. Encourage them to ask questions in a respectful manner. Review with them the schedule for the entire day so they know what to expect.

2 Pre-Test: What do you already know about disabilities?
Take out a piece of paper and a pencil. Put your name on the paper. On the first line write – Disability Pretest I will put up a series of statements and you need to indicated your response on a scale of 1-5. Very Little Very Much Walk them through these directions.

3 Very Little Very Much On a scale of 1 -5 how well do you understand your peers with disabilities? On a scale of 1-5 how well do you understand your peers with hearing impairments? On a scale of 1-5 how well do you understand your peers with visions impairments? On a scale of 1-5 how well do you understand your peers with communication impairments? On a scale of 1-5 how well do you understand your peers with physical impairments? On a scale of 1-5 how well do you understand your peers with learning disabilities? On a scale of 1-5 how well do you understand your peers with intellectual disabilities? What is your experience interacting with people with disabilities? Have them complete the pretest. You can have students share out any responses to number 8 if they want to share.

4 What does it mean to have a disability?
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) states that a person is disabled if he or she has a physical or developmental disability that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual; a record of such an disability. Discuss this slide.

5 Did Albert Einstein have a disability?
Discuss this slide Einstein’s parents once thought that he was cognitively delayed due to his odd habits and difficulties in school. If he were born today, Einstein would probably be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a mild form of autism.

Discuss this slide – do they recognize any names?

Autism Communication Disorders Hearing Impairments Learning Disabilities Cognitively Delayed Physical Disabilities Vision Impairments Explain these are the disabilities they will be learning about today.

8 Vision and Hearing Impairment
You will want to have started this activity with 4th period by 8:25. You will only have 30 minutes to complete slides 8-12 and the activities that go with them. These are the activities you will do with each of the rotations that come to you. This is the slide you will display at the start of each rotation. Tell the students which disabilities you will be focusing on and that both involve the ability of the body to detect sound and light waves.

9 Vision impairments include things like being short-sighted or far-sighted that are correctable with glasses. It can also mean more serious problems like blindness or problems that are only helped a little by glasses. Read these details. Point out that often vision problems are due to problems with the structure and/or function of the eye.

10 Vision Impairment Awareness: Activities
Blind Drawing – purpose is to understand complete blindness You will need a piece of notebook paper and a pencil for this activity. Blind Drawing – Draw a slip of paper from the baggie. With your eyes closed…no cheating…draw a picture of what is on your card. How did you do? Before going on to the next activity ask the students how they felt while doing this activity.

11 Hearing impairments include everything from not being able to hear certain sounds to being totally deaf. In most cases, a hearing loss doesn’t simply mean that sounds are not loud enough. It usually means that sounds are garbled or unclear. A hearing aid may make speech louder, but usually will not make speech clearer. Read these details. Point out that often hearing problems are due to problems with the structure and/or function of the ear.

12 Hearing Impairment Awareness: Activities
Sign 4 Me: purpose is to become more familiar with the sign language alphabet and use sign language to solve a puzzle You will continue working on the same piece of paper. As you figure out the famous quote in sign language record your answer to the puzzle on your piece of paper. In this activity students will try to figure out a quote using the sign language alphabet. Have the students work in pairs. Each pair gets a sign language alphabet page and a puzzle quote page. If you have extra time before you rotate you can students take turns picking a word out of the sign language dictionary and teach it to the rest of the class.

13 Rotation Debrief What did you learn from the activities?
Are you aware of students at HMS with disabilities? How can students interact and involve students with disabilities? Students at HMS with Disabilities Video Post Test 4th period returns to you at 12:11. You will have one hour to complete the activities and discussion on slides 13-19 Discuss these questions to debrief the morning. The blue link should take you to a video about students at HMS with disabilities. If the link does not work then tell the kids I will show the video on Monday. The post test is on the next slide.

16 What would you do? A classmate is being made fun of because of the way they look. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What could you do to help? You see that a friend earned a bad grade on a test and they seem really sad about it. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What could you do to help? At recess time, there is someone sitting out with no one to play with. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What could you do to help? Record responses on same page at post-test

17 What would you do? John, your best friend, has a little brother with MD. John and his family share caregiving duties. You win two awesome tickets to a concert and want John to go along but it is the day he is scheduled to stay in with his brother. Put yourself if their shoes. How would you feel? What would you do? Mary is a star student and will most likely be accepted into a top notch college at the end of her senior year. Her younger brother has MD as well as developmental delays. He wants to be on her science team during her senior year, but she is embarrassed her team won’t win with him on it. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What would you do? Record responses on same page at post-test

19 How will I show kindness and inclusion?
Draw an individual poster where you are helping someone by “putting yourself in their shoes”. How do you show kindness? Only do this if you have time. They can use computer paper I put on the table by the window. You can collect them and I will hang them up.

20 Documentary: Darius Goes West
You will want to start this movie by 1:15. To show the movie you will put the disk into the external disc drive sitting on top of the hard drive below the computer desk. Then on the desktop is an icon that looks like road cone. This is the movie player program- VLC media player. Open this. You will want to click on the drop down menu for media and then chose open disc. From there all you have to do is select play.
