2 What was it? The colonists declaring their independence from the King and Britain in the form of a letter. The greatest BREAKUP letter every written…it’s not us it’s you!

3 Why was it written? To break away from Britain and the King. To get our freedom and independence.

4 Who wrote it? Thomas Jefferson is it’s author

5 Where was it written? Independence Hall in Philadelphia

6 When was it approved and signed?
July 4th, 1776 Our nation’s BIRTHDAY!!!

7 Who signed it? 2nd Continental Congress
All 56 members from the 13 Colonies We will look at who they were on page 10

8 What ideas are in the document?
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happines All men are created equal Democracy in America Guaranteed human rights, freedoms, and individual rights

9 What is a grievance and how many did Jefferson list?
A grievance is a problem or issue Jefferson lists 27 things the king has done wrong

10 Why is it important to the colonies (and us today)?
Its marks the birth of our country Ideas help to found our government, still valid today Tells Britain and the world we are a FREE and INDEPENDENT Nation!!
