Do Now: Set up your paper with the title, and these boxes and row labels. Make the boxes pretty big – most of the front of your paper. Water Ethanol Water + Ethanol Observations Continuous Model Particle Model Water Ethanol Water + Ethanol Water Ethanol Water + Ethanol

2 Water and Ethanol Observe the water and ethanol and record your observations in the “observations” row. Draw the water in the “water” box Draw the ethanol in the “ethanol” box Predict what “water + ethanol” would look like if you mixed them together Draw your prediction in the “water + ethanol” box - still the “observations” row

4 Water and Ethanol Underneath your boxes or on the back of your paper, answer: Explain how your continuous model and particle model drawings are different. Which drawings (continuous model or particle model) do you think are more accurate? Why? In words, describe what you are predicting will happen when we mix water and ethanol together. (Remember you already drew your prediction, so they should match!)

6 Water And Ethanol What method did you use to predict the mixed volume for each set of samples? For the water+water trial, was the actual volume higher, lower, or the same as the one you predicted? For the ethanol+ethanol trial, was the actual volume higher, lower, or the same as the one you predicted? For the water+ethanol trial, was the actual volume higher, lower, or the same as the one you predicted?

7 Water and ethanol Look back at the prediction drawings you made earlier. Draw the same scenario (water, ethanol, water+ethanol) again, BUT this time you can choose any type of model to explain the volume data we got in the lab. Describe what you drew, and how/why it explains the volume data. Is your drawing more consistent with the continuous model or the particle model? Explain why.

8 WATER AND ETHANOL Find a partner. Write your partner’s name down.
Compare your model (from #5) to your partner’s model. Write down 2 similarities between your model and your partner’s model. What is one thing you liked about your partner’s model that was not part of your model? Staple ALL the papers you have about Water And Ethanol together and turn them in.

9 Water and ethanol Finish your lab and turn in ALL pages today!
A complete lab includes: Prediction table (observations/drawings) Prediction questions (1-3) Data table (volumes) Data and conclusion questions (1-10) If you are caught up from Friday/Monday, you should only need to do #5-10 at the end.
