1 Experimental Missional Ministry through Design Thinking

2 “We have to do something….. but we don’t know what to do…..”
Have you ever thought….. “We have to do something….. but we don’t know what to do…..”

3 Two Types of Change…. Technical Change: the problem is known and the solution is known Adaptive Change: neither the problem OR the solution are understood

4 The forces of change… Survival Anxiety: a feeling of motivation that compels change

5 The forces of change… Survival Anxiety: a feeling of motivation that compels change Learning Anxiety: the realization that we have no idea how to be different

6 The forces of change… Survival Anxiety: a feeling of motivation that compels change Learning Anxiety: the realization that we have no idea how to be different

7 Reduce learning anxiety

8 Design Thinking

9 Seeking to Understand Empathize mode seeks to understand the people as much as their challenge: physical and emotional needs opportunities and constraints what they do and why beliefs, values and priorities

10 Finding Insights This is an act of SENSEMAKING As a group:
Look at the small details Look at the big picture What are the takeaways here?

11 Finding Insights Craft a clear, simple, actionable PROBLEM STATEMENT
“Many children do not like doing homework So they waste their time and then complain That homework takes too long. How might we help them become more Efficient and focused on their homework?”

12 Brainstorming Ask: “How might we address this challenge?”
Generate the broadest range of ideas possible Defer judgment Choose 1 – 2 ideas to take into the next step.

13 Apply Learning Create a prototype solution that is: Modest in scale
Simple to make and execute Won’t cost much Something to try out for a short period of time Remember: this is a LEARNING PROCESS

14 Applying FOR Learning TESTING is for learning more about the challenge and the solution Have people EXPERIENCE the solution Seek feedback after the experience Evaluate: “What new things have we learned about the challenge and the solution?”

15 Start Next Iteration…

16 Design Thinking

17 Seeking to Understand New Immigrants to Canada:
“Our children struggle reading English…” Interview me!

18 Seeking to Understand Learnings
The struggle to read affects all subjets in school It is more about comprehension Homework takes longer Not enough one-on-one time with the teacher for help

19 Craft Problem Statement
The struggle to read affects all subjets in school It is more about comprehension Homework takes longer Not enough one-on-one time with the teacher for help

20 clear, simple, sharp, actionable
Craft Problem Statement clear, simple, sharp, actionable “How can we help immigrant children grow in capability and confidence with English so they can thrive as a student in all subject areas?

21 Brainstorming “How can we help immigrant children grow in capability and confidence with English so they can thrive as a student in all subject areas?”

22 After School Homework Help Program:
Brainstorming After School Homework Help Program: One-on-one help Work on any academic subject Relies on verbal communication and reading Reduces time to do homework A focus on English comprehension

23 Apply Learning Create a prototype solution that is: Modest in scale
Simple to make and execute Won’t cost much Something to try out for a short period of time Remember: this is a LEARNING PROCESS

24 Apply Learning Prototype: Weekly sessions over 6 weeks
No more than 6 students 8 volunteers: coordinator, resource person, 6 coaches Budget: for snacks, paper, pens Remember: this is a LEARNING PROCESS

25 Applying for Learning Evaluate: “What did we learn?”
Try to keep the same coach for the student Six week “terms” with breaks Accommodate religious holidays Accommodate first language classes Has to be more fun Need a bigger budget for snacks! Flexibility is preferred
