1 Accommodation Plan for Adults with Learning Disabilities 2018-2023
Working together, to improve and make a difference

2 Why we wrote the plan We want to make sure that adults with learning disabilities are supported to be as independent as they can be….

3 Why we wrote the plan ...for as long as possible and that they have choice and control over how they are supported to live their lives.

4 About the plan The plan is about how the Council can help an adult with a learning disability find a place to live, with the support that’s right for them, both now and in the future.

5 What we wanted to do We wanted to gather all the information together to help us work out where adults with learning disabilities are living now and what else we need to do so people can live in housing that meets their needs and with support that is right for them.

6 The information in the plan
The information in the plan is about adults with a learning disability who are known to Adult Social Care at the City of York Council.

7 What we found out This is information from March 2018 when there were 533 adults with learning disabilities known to adult social care.

8 What we found out - Age 29% are aged 18-29 31% are aged 30-49

9 What we found out – support
72% have high support needs (30+ hours of support) 12% medium support needs (11-29 hours of support) 9% low support needs (0-10 hours of support)

10 What we found out - accommodation
50% = own tenancies (either in supported living or in their own tenancies in the community) 29% = at home with their parents 5% = shared lives placements 14% = college or in residential / nursing placements 1% = in hospital 1% = owner occupiers.

11 What we found out – future need
We think that about 67 customers will need different places to live in the next five years for different reasons.

12 To do In the plan there are ideas about what to do next.

13 Example (1) of what needs to be done
There needs to be good information and advice about where to live and the support someone may need…

14 Housing information and advice
…..to help adults with learning disabilities, and their families, make choices about where they want to live and to know how they can access the housing and support that is right for them.

15 Example (2) of what needs to be done
Ageing Well

16 Ageing Well for adults with learning disabilities
We know that adults with learning disabilities are getting older. (39% are aged over 50 and 16% aged over 40).

17 Ageing Well for adults with learning disabilities
Older adults with learning disabilities need to be supported to age well and to stay active and healthy

18 Next Steps The plan has a separate action plan which will work on the things that need to be done.
