Fig 1 An example of how the coding method would be used to code a patient with bacterial pneumonia. The patient did not have surgery for the condition, so the first tier is non‐surgical. The body system involved is the respiratory system, and the anatomical site is the lungs. The process is infection and the condition is bacterial pneumonia. The computer generates a numerical code that describes the route through the hierarchy.
