Fig 2 Continuous recording of V˙O2 during a weaning trial from pressure support ventilation in a patient with prolonged ventilatory support. Stepwise changes in inspiratory pressures are indicated by arrows. The V˙O2 increases dramatically, in association with weaning failure. Weaning failure occurred despite only modest increases in the ventilatory frequency/tidal volume ratio. Each data point represents the mean of 5 min metabolic or respiratory data.
