1 Process Safety Management
Refresher Training

2 Purpose of refresher training
Reminds employees of correct operations Informs employees of changes to processes Covers new information regarding changed policies and procedures 1a

3 When refresher training is required
A highly hazardous chemical (HHC) is introduced into a process New equipment is installed 2a

4 When refresher training is required
Changes in parameters of a process occur New procedures are introduced 2b

5 When refresher training is required
Provided at least every three years More often if necessary Ensures that each employee understands and adheres to current operating procedures 2c

6 Primary purpose of PSM Continually attempt to reduce HHCs below threshold quantities Use alternate chemicals if the chemical cannot be reduced Monitor processes to ensure they are in compliance 3a

7 Definitions Highly hazardous chemicals are potentially: Toxic Reactive
Flammable Explosive 4a

8 Definitions Process - any activity involving a HHC, including: Use
Storage Manufacturing Handling On-site movement Any combination of these 4b

9 Definitions Process safety - safe operation of facilities that handle hazardous materials Process safety management - application of management principles and standards to identify, understand, and control process hazards 4c

10 Elements of the PSM standard
Employee participation Process safety information Process hazard analysis Operating procedures 5a

11 Elements of the PSM standard
Employee training Contractors Pre-startup safety review Mechanical integrity of equipment 5b

12 Elements of the PSM standard
Hot work permits Management of change Incident investigations 5c

13 Elements of the PSM standard
Emergency planning and response Compliance audits Trade secrets and documentation 5d

14 Safety and health considerations
Includes anything likely to cause acute or chronic health problems; or Could result in process-related injuries & accidents 6a

15 Operating limits Operating limits-related issues include:
Voltage limits of equipment Amperage limits of equipment Phase limits of equipment 7a

16 Operating limits Process chemical limits-related issues include:
Can the equipment handle the properties of the chemical? Does the process maintain the chemical’s proper physical properties? 7b

17 Operating limits Process chemical limits-related issues include:
Does the process cause the chemical to break down? Does the process cause the chemical to boil or freeze? 7c
