Welcome everyone. You may want to acknowledge that this is a busy time of year and how much you appreciate their commitment to learn together.

2. Words from Dr. Bice
This is a recent picture of Dr. Bice doing what he enjoys most! This picture was taken while he was entertaining a young boy who was with his mom at the SDE. You might notice the chair – this is the constant reminder in Dr. Bice’s office that EVERY decision needed to be made through the lens of who sits in that chair – the child.
Today’s video is an update, but it is focused on assessment. Over the last ten years or so, we have accumulated a lot of assessments. As we move toward the new work with a new vision, we must find a way to let go of some of the old work. It is impossible to do both – it is exhausting and unproductive. (Ask them to look at the handout because it is related to what Dr. Bice says and we will give them a few minutes afterward to discuss with a neighbor).

4. Assessment Balanced and Meaningful
After the video, allow a couple of minutes for them to talk to someone about what they heard – ask them to reference the handout and consider if it has any implications for their district, school, work.

5. Our Vision Every Child a Graduate – Every Graduate Prepared for
College/Work/Adulthood in the 21st Century
Everything we do should lead to this outcome. There are two important parts to this vision. We are continuing to get better at providing opportunity for all of our students to graduate. But, we must remember the second part of the vision – every graduate prepared. This is our challenge – opportunities and expectations that every student has a pathway to be successful in life beyond high school.
These CCRS meetings are intended to equip us with greater understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to be successful beyond high school.

6. Absolutes
Teach to the standards for each of the required subjects (Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards - Courses of Study)
Through a clearly articulated and locally aligned K-12 curriculum (Sample curricula found on ALEX and Alabama Insight)
Supported by aligned resources, support, and professional development (Sample lesson plans and supporting resources found on ALEX, differentiated support through ALSDE Regional Planning/Support Teams and ALSDE Initiatives, etc.)
Monitored regularly through formative, interim/benchmark assessments to inform the effectiveness of the instruction and continued learning needs of individuals and groups of students (GlobalScholar, QualityCore Benchmarks, and other locally determined assessments)
With a goal that each student graduates from high school with the knowledge and skills to succeed in post-high school education and the workforce without the need for remediation as evidenced by multiple measures achieved through multiple pathways to meet the graduation requirements set for students in Alabama. (Alabama High School Graduation Requirements/Diploma)
These absolutes really should guide our message, our professional learning plans, our reflection on implementation. Many of you are using these absolutes to review everything you are doing and ensure that you stay focused.
We, too, use them as our guide to keep us from straying from the message – the goal – the vision.

7. We still have CCRS! CCRS UPDATE!!
Absolute #1 – Teach to the Standards.
We still have them! Thank you for your communication to your parents and communities about how these standards are making a difference. We will probably have this battle again next legislative session. It is critical that teachers, administrators, etc. share the difference the standards and the new vision are making in classrooms.

9. CCRS Announcements 2014-2015 CCRS Implementation Team Meetings
CCRS Summer Teaching Academies
Social Studies Summer Professional Learning through the Regional Inservice Centers
They should have a handout with the dates for the school year. Some sites have 2-3 dates. Ask them just to hold those dates until they get more detailed information from the regional support staff.
Summer Teaching Academies will be focused on grades 6,7, and 8 this summer – English, math, and science teachers will participate in LTF (Laying the Foundation) professional learning. The priority middle schools will be invited first, then if seats are still available, we will invite middle schools that are in a feeder pattern that has a priority school, and finally, if seats are still available, then we will open it up to other middle schools. We will know by the end of May if there are seats available.
They will be in four different locations across the state.
SS – each RIC will send out information about summer SS sessins.
