Postgraduate researchers will be referred to these documents, this section outlines the specific role of the supervisor in the writing and submission process.

3 The Thesis supervision……

The supervisor is expected to: - Read and comment on the draft/ production of the thesis - Approve it is the students own work within the prescribed research area - Ensure it complies with the conditions of candidature and ethical approval The candidate should discuss the length of the thesis with the supervisor and may find it helpful to look at other theses. Thesis content material - It’s the students responsibility for writing, preparing and submitting the thesis within the completion period. Candidates are responsible for writing their thesis in their own words, where other sources are used they must be clearly identified and acknowledged - The University encourages students to submit their work for publication (this may be included in a thesis and must be integrated with the hypotheses and central arguments)

The supervisor can support the student through the examination process by: - Awareness of the process or timeframes involved to guide and support - Provide feedback on the thesis - Sign post the student to appropriate training and support - Provide a practice or mock viva with the student – specialist viva cards are available to use from your School PGR Director As a supervisor, you will be expected to act as independent chair for viva voce assessments for other PhD students outside of your School. Independent chair summary: - The independent chair is responsible for ensuring all paperwork is completed and submitted to central student administration (SA - PGR ) - The viva should run smoothly and fairly - the chair helps ensure this to minimise and mitigate any complaints against the examination process - The IC Checklist provides a guide, should you have any queries, please contact your School PGR administrator or PGR Director
