1 THE FLUID MOSAIC MODEL OF THE CELL MEMBRANE
What is the Fluid Mosaic Model of the Cell Membrane?

2 The fluid mosaic model is an exact (or close to exact) depiction of what the cell membrane looks like. It is FLUID because of the free lateral or sideward movement of its components such as proteins. And it is a MOSAIC model because it made up of many different parts.

3 The Role of Phospholipids
Because phospholipids has water soluble and a fat soluble heads and tails respectively, they fold up to create a bilayer(keeping out any unwanted substances). This bilayer formation is the basis on which the fluid mosaic model was constructed.

4 The Role of Cholesterol
The cholesterol in the membrane makes it more stable. It also keeps the body from getting solid (freeze) when temperatures drop to freezing levels. And because it is a liquid, it allows the other components, such as proteins, to move freely, hence the reason why scientist believe that the membrane is fluid like.

5 The Roles of Protein Proteins hold up the regular easy bonding membrane structure. And because of their unique shape they also function as receptors and receptor sites for attachment to specific and appropriate raw materials for cell membrane functions. They may also act as signal transducer (is a mechanism that converts a mechanical/chemical stimulus to a cell into a specific cellular response) that initiates enzyme-catalyzed reactions.

6 Proteins cont’d That in turn stimulates reactions for functions in a cell. Proteins also assists in moving substances across membranes(facilitated diffusion), cell to cell adhesion, and attachment to the internal exoskeleton.

7 Role of Glycoproteins Glycoproteins attached to the surface, aids in membrane location and identification of food, water, wastes, and other membrane traffic. Each cell has a specific glycoprotein structure based on its need to attract and repel membrane traffic.
