Fig. 13.5 Cardiac Cycle

Cardiac Cycle When walls of a chamber come together to pump blood it is known as SYSTOLE

When the walls of a chamber are relaxed and spread apart to fill with blood, this is known as DIASTOLE.

The Cardiac Cycle is the events that take place from the start of one Atrial Systole to the start of the second Atrial Systole. TIME ATRIA VENTRICLES 0.15 sec SYSTOLE DIASTOLE 0.30 sec DIASTOLE SYSTOLE 0.40 sec DIASTOLE DIASTOLE Total time required to complete one cycle = 0.85 seconds. Therefore, a typical heart rate will be about 70 complete cycles (beats) per 60 seconds/(1 minute)

Fig. 13.5

Controlling the Cardiac Cycle
Two ways of controlling heart rate involve either Nerve Impulses or Hormones.

NODAL TISSUE Nodal Tissue is special tissue that is rich in both muscle and nerve tissue.
