2 Stream’s distributary
channel, is a stream that branches off and flows away from a main stream channel. They are a common feature of river deltas. The opposite of a distributary is a tributary.

3 floods an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.

4 flood Floodplain an area of land that is prone to flooding.
People realize it is prone to flooding because it has flooded in the past due to a river or stream overflowing its banks.  usually is a flat area with areas of higher elevation on both sides.

5 Dams and levees Dam dam is a barrier that impounds water or underground streams. Reservoirs created by dams not only suppress floods but also provide water for such activities as irrigation, human consumption, industrial use, aquaculture, and navigability.

6 Dams and levees Levee an embankment built to prevent the overflow of a river. a ridge of sediment deposited naturally alongside a river by overflowing water.

a deposit of sand or mud built up along, and sloping away from, either side of the flood plain of a river or stream
