Stream’s distributary
channel, is a stream that branches off and flows away from a main stream channel. They are a common feature of river deltas. The opposite of a distributary is a tributary.

flood Floodplain an area of land that is prone to flooding.
People realize it is prone to flooding because it has flooded in the past due to a river or stream overflowing its banks. usually is a flat area with areas of higher elevation on both sides.

Dams and levees Dam dam is a barrier that impounds water or underground streams. Reservoirs created by dams not only suppress floods but also provide water for such activities as irrigation, human consumption, industrial use, aquaculture, and navigability.
