1 Comparison of Texts

2 Use a three-column graphic organizer to summarize each text
1. Engage in a group activity to examine "The Country That Stopped Reading" by David Toscana, "The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story Is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains" by Leo Widrich, and "Video Games and the Future of Storytelling" by Salman Rushdie. For each text, have groups: Use a three-column graphic organizer to summarize each text (1) identify each claim or point made in the order it is made; (2) describe how each claim or point is developed and refined by particular phrases, sentences, paragraphs, or sections; and (3) identify the connections made between claims.

3 o Reread the text and highlight or circle words and phrases that reveal the author's attitude toward the subject of the text. o Determine a central idea of the text and assess whether the author's reasoning is valid and the evidence sufficiently supports the author's claims. o Determine and explain the author's purpose based on the evaluation of the author's tone, claims, and evidence. o Present the summary, tone, central idea, and author's purpose, citing evidence from the text to support their analysis of the text.
