1 3.2 Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE)

2 Definition Coefficient:
numeric factor that is being multiplied by the variable. Example: -3x ½ y ½

3 The Multiplication Property of Equality
For all rational numbers a, b , and c If a = b, then ac = bc You can multiply the same number by both sides. When you multiply by the reciprocal it is the same as dividing.

4 To solve an equation like 8x = 96
Goal: need to isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign. How: do the opposite operation of what is being done to the variable. Why: by doing the opposite operation it will make the coefficient of x “1”. Rule: whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other.

5 Solve: 5x = 30 Show your work exactly like this tonight

6 Solve: -7x = 49

7 Always remember to reduce the fractions!!
Solve: -12x = -8 Always remember to reduce the fractions!!

8 Solve:

9 To solve an equation like:
Multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the coefficient

10 Solve: If a negative sign is on the outside of a fraction put it in the numerator.

11 Solve:

12 Solve:

13 If a variable does not have a coefficient put 1 in front of it.
Solve:

14 Solve:

15 Solve:
