Assignment Monday 1/30/17 If you haven’t finished already, write the name of each speaker for the remaining quotations on your quotation notes. If you haven’t turned in your essay yet, you need to do so for late credit. Follow the instructions on your grading checklist.

Assignment Monday 1/30/17 (Continued) For each page of quotation notes, match each quotation to its meaning on the following slides. (Each slide coordinates with a page of notes.)

(Page 2) Banquo questions whether evil beings (such as the witches) are capable of speaking truth. (distrust) Banquo comments that sometimes evil beings (such as the witches) use small truths to earn people’s trust so that they can then mislead them into an evil trap. (distrust) Macbeth doesn’t understand why he’s been given the title of thane of Cawdor since he thinks the thane of Cawdor still lives. This __________________ the possibility that Macbeth will take other positions of leadership (such as king) that do not rightly belong to him. Macbeth thinks that he will become king since the first two prophecies came true. The witches prophesy that Banquo’s descendants will be kings. Banquo wants to know his future, too. He is neither asking favors nor afraid of the witches. Banquo questions whether the witches are real. (disbelief)

(Page 3) Macbeth cannot decide whether the witches’ prophecy is good or bad. The thought of killing the king scares him to death, yet that’s all he can think of. Macbeth tells the king that his duty is to protect and serve the king. Macbeth seems uncomfortable with his new title. It’s like clothes that haven’t been broken in yet. Macbeth believes that he will be king since the first two prophecies came true. Macbeth wants to speak more with Banquo about the witches’ prophecies. One way or another, what’s going to happen will happen. You can’t judge a man by his appearance.

(Page 4) The king plans to reward Banquo for his service. Macbeth sees Malcolm as an obstacle. Macbeth asks darkness to hide his thoughts of killing the king. Macbeth won’t let his eye see what his hand is doing, but he does intend to do that which he fears to see done (kill the king).
