5 In November 1985, Gorbachev and Reagan met in Geneva, Switzerland.
End of the Arms Race In November 1985, Gorbachev and Reagan met in Geneva, Switzerland. Although Reagan refused to give up his commitment to the Strategic Defence Initiative (Star Wars) both leaders agreed they needed to work to make the world a “safer place” Both leaders committed to meet in the future and: * Hold talks about arms reductions * Work towards the abolition of nuclear and chemical weapons. * Work towards improving human rights. These points became known as the Geneva Accords.

6 Break down in Relationship?
Gorbachev and Reagan met again in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1986. Although they agreed on huge reductions of the amount of nuclear weapons they possessed, Reagan refused to give up the SDI program. Gorbachev said that Reagans insistence on SDI had “frustrated and Scuttled” the opportunity for an agreement. Based on what you know about Reagan and Gorbachev, what do you think happened next?

7 Arms Treaties Read through the information on pages 101 and 102 of the hand outs. Create fact files about the three sets of agreements between the USA and USA that were made between 1987 and 1991. 9 What was the Sinatra Doctrine?
After the Second World War, Stalin had taken over Eastern Europe and set up Communist Governments in countries such as Poland, East Germany and Hungary. Russia gave these countries military and financial support to make sure they stayed communist. By the late 1980s, Russia could no longer afford to do this and withdrew its army from Eastern Europe. These countries were told they could decide their own future. This became known as the Sinatra Doctrine. Frank Sinatra sang the song "I did it my way"
