Using Survey Results in Assessment
Assessment made Easy(ier) Julie Meyer Rao, Ph.D. Director of Institutional Research I’d like to talk to about an underused tool at Geneseo, the existing surveys we conduct. We have a regular rotation of surveys that ask about a variety of areas. These data are available for use, can be organized in different ways to explore issues of interest. Some may only give a broad brush, but we also have comparison data which offers valuable perspective.
2
Learning Outcomes Knowledge of wiki resources to learn more about surveys Familiarity with different national surveys regularly conducted by Geneseo offices Insight into different analytic techniques Given limited time, keeping it simple with 3 outcomes Want you to learn about the different surveys we already do and the areas they cover Knowing you can’t learn the nuances of the different surveys we do in a 50” presentation, want you to understand resources to help you learn more about surveys wiki space with schedule, Excel file with questions organized by topic, presentations where can see different analysis used, as well as survey results for different years How results have been analyzed and presented by IR, what insights possible to gain from existing data
3
Wiki Resources IR wiki space - https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/IR
Need to log in to see National surveys – lists surveys, schedule & responsible office Excel file with question list Separate area for results for each survey IR conducts Office Presentations – examples of analysis

On IR wiki space -> National Surveys Excel file attempts to break survey questions down into different departments’ interests Provide source of survey question Log into link – be able to switch back & forth, say will need to see responsible office for reports MLS has report with data tables

Student Surveys have other options
NSSE SOS COPLAC schools as comparison Last two administrations, SUNY comprehensives as comparison Compare first year responses from 2013 to seniors in 2017 Major reports No national sample SUNY comprehensives & all state ops SUNY rankings provided for many questions All these are basis options, readily available on wiki for comparison purposes Major reports, for some larger major, standard from NSSE given report with national norms comparison Do not see charts with this info but routinely cite rates of STAB, UG research as being higher than COPLAC in annual report & other mar/COM publications
9
Custom analysis NSSE – possible to look at just your majors
Associate Provost Kallio presented on his findings from psychology seniors Look at differential effects for groups Found different perceptions for male/female student, white students/students of color on NSSE & SOS NSSE gives opportunity to compare responses across classes, first year v. seniors Have provided custom major reports; if have enough respondents can do this; have combined across years to get enough representation
