1 GRADE 9 – SUBJECT CHOICE INFORMATION SESSION
Choosing subjects that meet individual ability and career needs Matching abilities with possible careers Make Suitable subject choices Most students are undecided about a career – quite normal Assist learners to identify abilities – psychometric tests (Mrs Melissa Riordan elaborate on this) & actual school performance (Teachers to offer advice)

3 NSC REQUIREMENTS 7 SUBJECTS
4 COMPULSORY SUBJECTS LANGUAGE OF LEARNING & TEACHING ADDITIONAL OFFICIAL LANGUAGE MATHEMATICS OR MATHS LITERACY LIFE ORIENTATION + CHOICE OF 3 APPROVED SUBJECTS NSC – National Senior Certificate – Grade 12 school leaving certificate – 2008 replaces the Senior Certificate. Language of learning and teaching – English Home Lanuguage Official language (There are 11 Official) – We offer Afrikaans EITHER AT 1st Additional level OR Home Language level Only immigrants can choose one of the Non-Official Languages as their Additional Language - French, German, Spanish, Herbrew or Portuguese

4 COMPULSORY SUBJECTS MATHEMATICS Discipline of mathematical sciences: algebra, geometry, trigonometry and analytical problem solving OR MATHEMATICAL LITERACY Discipline of numeracy: everyday use of numbers, graphs and symbols Note: It is not Maths at a different level, it’s a different kind of Maths Maths - Required for tertiary studies in Science, Health Sciences, Engineering & Commerce Maths Literacy – Relevant in certain fields of Humanities.

Life Orientation Personal Well-being – self knowledge & coping skills Citizenship Education – social justice & sustainable living Physical Well-being & recreation Careers and Career Choices Life Orientation – New look Guidance Develop a healthy self-esteem and reach one’s potential Develop a good healthy life style – fitness, good diet and stress management. Prepare one to cope with daily challenges. To function optimally in the real world.

Of your 7 subjects, 4 must be from the designated highlighted list for entry into degree studies

Physical, Mathematical, Computer & Life Sciences Physical Sciences Life Sciences (Biology) Mathematics Mathematical Literacy Computer Applications Technology (CAT) Languages English – (Compulsory) Afrikaans French Languages on designated list – 2 Official Languages and 1 other recognised language –Can only have French or German or other approved Unofficial Language.

Mathematical Literacy Languages - 2 official History Geography Dramatic Arts Subject choice determine access to various fields of study. The different faculties in bold print prescribed that to gain entry, a learner have the required school subjects and achieve certain level (%) in these subjects. Science (excluding psychology & social work), Humanities (Journalism, Media & communications, Drama,Graphic Design), Health Science (helping professions, Sport & Recreation),

GAINING ADMISSION TO UNIVERSITY (Bachelor’s Degree - BA, BSc, BCom & LLB) 4 of 7 subjects must be from designated list Achieve a minimum Admissions Point Score (APS) Some faculties - Minimum APS plus particular subject levels National Benchmark tests (NBTs) - www. nbt.ac.za Designated subjects at Theodor are those highlighted in blue APS means – Levels converted to points APS requirements differ slightly from one institution to another Minimum level e.g. BSc – Min APS of 35 + NSC Maths & Science level of 5 National Benchmark tests – scores especially for selection courses – MBChB, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Speech Pathologhy

APS required to be considered for admission. In addition to requiring a min. APS,some programmes may set additional subject requirements. EG BSc APS of 35 & a NSC rating of 5 for Maths. University give no points for 30% and below.
