Welcome to Year 6

Homework Homework is given to the children every Monday and should be returned to school on Friday. The children will normally have to complete a piece of Literacy and spelling homework as well as Numeracy homework and their work should all be done on the sheet. Some children will still need help at home to complete their homework but even if they don’t, you should check that your child has understood the work which has been set. It is very important that the children get used to completing their homework and managing their own time as it is an essential skill when they get to secondary school. We are aware that there is a lot of homework, however as a year group across the country they are effectively a year behind in terms of the new curriculum and we need to ensure they are fully prepared for their new SATs in May and we ask for your co-operation with this.

Reading Records The children are expected to read for at least 20 minutes per night and fill in the information inside their Reading Record. It is important that an adult checks that their child is reading and signs the reading record. Reading records should come into school everyday, but an adult in school will be checking that the reading record is being signed and up to date every Wednesday. If the reading record is not consistently signed 5 times a week by an adult your child will receive an additional reading comprehension on the Wednesday due back in Thursday.

PE We are scheduled for PE lessons on Thursdays (outdoor PE lesson). Please ensure that the children have the correct PE uniform (make sure that girls have PE socks to change into as they can’t wear their tights), that all the children have a PE T-Shirt to change into and appropriate footwear.

National Assessments Children will be assessed on reading, spelling punctuation and grammar (SPAG) 2 maths papers (both non-calculator) and a mental arithmetic test. Children are not given levels but will be expected to achieve over a baseline score (100) within their year group. Children who fail to reach 100 will be deemed to be below average against the Government’s baseline. Tested against the new (harder) curriculum and year 6 coverage.

Year 6 Buddies All the children in Year 6 are given specific jobs and Buddy duties to complete over the week. The children will be expected to check the Buddy Rota and see which day they are on duty. They have been given these extra responsibilities as we want them to develop in confidence in different situations and prepare themselves for secondary school.

PGL Please check that you have given in all your forms and filled in the medical section correctly (with your NHS number, let us know if your child has any allergies, date of the most recent tetanus injection and your contact details). Payments should now have been made in full. Dates: 15th – 19th October 2018. PGL meeting WEDNESDAY 10TH October 6:00pm in the hall.
