1 Treaty of Versailles

2 Representatives from the winning countries met to decide the terms of the peace treaty. The leader of France (Georges Clemenceau) wanted Germany crushed so that his country would never be invaded again. The US (Woodrow Wilson) wanted a peace without victory - no winners or losers – everyone treated fairly so that no country would want revenge. Britain (David Lloyd George) tried to compromise. 6 Terms of the treaty Reparations – payments for damages caused in the war. Germany and its allies had to agree to make these payments. Germany’s share amounted to $33 billion. Land - losing countries lost land from their borders and overseas colonies. Military power – Germany was forced to reduce the size of its army to just 100,000 men, give up most of its navy and its air force. The country would have enough strength to defend itself but not to attack. A section of Germany close to France was turned into a demilitarized zone.

8 LEAGUE of Nations p30 Blue book
Collective security – a group of countries working together for peace 1. Germany and Russia were not allowed to join the League. Why? 2. How did the League of Nations settle disputes between countries? 3. If a country ignored the League’s decision what would happen next? The League did not have an army of its own and so depended on member countries. 4. The organization was an idea put forward by the US president but the US never joined; instead they followed a policy of isolation. Explain.

9 LEAGUE of NATIONS 1 Germany can’t join – lost the war – still considered an enemy USSR can‘t join – dropped out early – communist government 2 Argument between countries – the 2 countries present their arguments to an impartial judge (another country) who makes a decision – could take up to 6 months 3 If you don’t agree with the decision – shut off from all communication and trade – isolated from the rest of the world 4 US followed a policy of isolation – did not get involved with the problems of other countries
