Subject Matter Generally some kind of injustice: political, domestic, romantic Purpose was to arouse strong opinions/feelings American ballads follow same ideas Examples: Ballad of Davey Crocket; Yankee Doodle; Barbara Allen; John Henry Most famous in England is Robin Hood
