Satire If you’re good at it, you can make fun of people without them even realizing it.

Satire Defined Exposing vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings by means of ridicule, ideally with the intent to bring about improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humor in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit.

Why would people use satire?

Satirical Devices Satire Mockery Irony Paradox Parody Bathos Mock-
Heroic Verbal Dramatic Situational Caricature Oxymoron Under- statement Hyperbole

Hyperbole Hyperbole is a rhetorical device in which statements are exaggerated. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally. These books weigh a ton. I could sleep for a year. The path went on forever. I'm doing a million things right now.

Understatement Understatement is a form of speech which contains an expression of less strength than what would be expected. “It’s just a flesh wound!”

Paradox and Oxymoron A paradox is a statement or group of statements that leads to a contradiction or a situation which defies logic. “Cowards die many times before their deaths.” “The child is the father of man.” An oxymoron is a mini paradox – two words that contradict one another The silence was deafening “Parting is such sweet sorrow” “O heavy lightness!” And everyone’s favorite oxymoron…

Parody and Caricature A parody is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous imitation. AKA spoofs or lampoons Scary Movie, Saturday Night Live A caricature is a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.

Mock Heroic A mock heroic is a satire or parody that mocks common Classical stereotypes of heroes and heroic literature. Typically, mock-heroic works invert the heroic work by either putting a fool in the role of the hero or by exaggerating the heroic qualities to such a point that they become absurd.

Bathos Bathos is the expression of humor in a phrase, though done through the use of an incongruous or ironic combination of ideas in order to deliberately make the humorous aspect seem unintended. Mostly this is done by going straight from a serious subject…
