1 The intrinsic apoptotic pathway is a balance between proapoptotic proteins, for example, Bax and Bak and antiapoptotic proteins. The intrinsic apoptotic pathway is a balance between proapoptotic proteins, for example, Bax and Bak and antiapoptotic proteins. The latter works by inhibiting Bax and Bak. When the inhibition stops, Bax and Bak change the mitochondrial outer membrane, causing release of cytochrome C, which triggers the Caspases and causes apoptosis.87 Dorte Schou Nørøxe et al.
