Injury to epidermal cells only Surface layer may/may not be shed Only life threatening if 2/3 body is burned Skin is red and extremely painful

8 Second Degree Burns Caused by hot liquid, burned clothing, and some chemicals Burn that destroys some epidermis & some dermis Critical if over 30% of body is burned

9 Second Degree Burns

11 Third Degree Caused by extreme hot liquids or solids, flame, chemicals, or electricity Epidermis, dermis and accessory organs are destroyed Not very painful b/c nerve endings are damaged Critical if 10% of the total body surface is burned

16 Rule of Nines a formula for estimating the percentage of adult body surface covered by burns by assigning 9% to the head and each arm, twice 9% (18%) to each leg and the anterior and posterior trunk, and 1% to the perineum. This is modified in infants and children because of the proportionately larger head size.
