ENDURING UNDERSTANDING
The diversity of cells contributes to the diversity of life on Earth.

LEARNING GOAL I will observe structures and behaviors of single-celled microorganisms with a microscope. I will compare elodea cells and paramecia cells.

MICROSCOPIC LIFE

PROTISTA Paramecia are single-celled organisms in a kingdom of life called Protista. In Greek, proto means early, and protist means the very first. Protists are not animals! They are single-celled and all animals are Multicellular.

PARAMECIA VS ELODEA Can a single living cell be a living organism?
Can a single living cell not be a living organism? Is an Elodea leaf cell a living organism? Is a paramecium cell a living organism?

PARAMECIA VS ELODEA Paramecia are not made of cells, because each paramecium itself is a single cell. Just like the individual green “bricks” in the Elodea are individual cells, each paramecium is an individual cell.

PARAMECIA VS ELODEA The Elodea plant is an organism. Elodea is made of many cells. Elodea is a multicellular organism. The paramecium is an organism. The paramecium is, however, just one cell. Paramecia are single-celled organisms (Unicellular).

PARAMECIA VS ELODEA How are elodea and paramecia different? How are they the same?

WORD BANK Paramecium- single-celled protist organism (unicellular). Oval shaped with cilia. Cilia- hair-like structures around the paramecium that help it move and get food.
