1 Evidence Visualisation Tool (EVT)
Police Knowledge Fund Evidence Visualisation Tool (EVT)

2 What is the EVT Prototype interactive software capable of use on any web-enabled device Can link directly to a performance data/performance visualisation tool, be used to access information on a specific problems identified or as a straight on-line resource Problem rather than search topic focused Has access for and communicates actions to different audiences Passes the ‘2 clicks’ test

3 Why are we developing EVT?
Initial need identified through interviews, surveys and focus groups of serving officers (N=600) across all ranks and majority of functions carried out before PKF Key related findings: Evidence only of interest if linked to presenting problems at the individual/team/command levels Must navigate easily (‘no more than two clicks’) – the rest of the world does Must have different access portals

4 Why an EVT (cont.)? PKF Knowledge Workshop Surveys: N=500
Two surveys across six Forces CSA/E Teams & all Officers - Mental Health How do people acquire role related knowledge now? To what extent do they use quality assured (QA) evidence sources?

5 Data (CSA/E) Main Source: From within own team (75%)
Local Children’s Services (31%) Other local sources (LSCB etc.) (12%) QA Sources CoP (20%) POLKA (15%) Others (5%) {SEBP etc.}

6 Data (MH) Main Source: Local MH resources {Liaison &Diversion, CCR embedded & Street Triage staff} (45%) Other police colleagues (42%) QA Sources: CoP (8%) POLKA (4%) Others (3%)

7 Why is this Important? Knowledge acquired in closed systems?
Where is QA evidence injection ? Same mistakes repeated ? Knowledge not up dated ?

8 Why is this important (cont.)
MH: 55% did not think (or were unsure whether) they had sufficient knowledge to do their job effectively CSA/E: 58% did not think (or were unsure whether) they had sufficient knowledge to do their job effectively

9 Why is this important (examples)
Two examples from other BPC work: CSE/A team intervention evaluation (linked to the national RASSO EIA evaluation): In many cases staff concerned about their levels of knowledge Staff relied heavily on colleagues for knowledge who were themselves equally uncertain Injection of new evidence based knowledge demonstrably made a measurable difference to confidence, competence and effectiveness

10 Why is this important (examples)
MH training needs assessment and training and education design for current MH specialist teams working in police (& court) settings Show significant gaps in knowledge of MH practice in police settings Specialist staff soon isolated and knowledge out of date High staff turnover Levels of experience of complex presentations variable

11 Link to Tool Kit Usability Testing
A total of 25 issues were uncovered in the usability study. The areas that caused the most problems were the filtering and search features The majority of issues relating to content were regarding the icons and the terminology used to describe them. Communication issues related to the icons on the effect scale and quality scale, and how they were understood.

12 Link to Tool Kit Usability Testing
Strategic Recommendations: FOCUS ON FIRST IMPRESSIONS REDESIGN ICONS CONTENT UPDATES Our combined findings offer opportunities to explore how the EVT and the Toolkit could be developed to complement each other

13 Where are we up to? Prototype built
Adding evidence from own work funded by PKF and from the What Works Centre for Crime Reduction Using EMMIE as the evidence standard but there are opportunities to refine further Link built to our existing Performance Visualization Tool (but can work with other links or stand-alone) Two user testing rounds completed, currently completely third and final round

14 Why the tool responds to the strategic needs?
Problem focused communication Easily accessible - Two clicks Actionable information Advice tailored to the individual Tool can be adapted readily

15 Evidence categorisation (currently EMMIE)
Information Modules Performance Action Implementation Resources Problem Evidence categorisation (currently EMMIE) Description Collaboration Accessibility
