1 Technology Drop-in Slides
The following slides were developed in coordination with the additional strand to core curriculum to address the need of supporting Developmentally Appropriate Use of Technology in ECE classrooms. They are intended to be used in combination with other modules. 4/8/2019 2013 California Department of Education (CDE) California Preschool Instructional Network (CPIN)

2 Increasing literacy demands
When educators appropriately integrate technology and interactive media into their classrooms, equity and access are addressed by providing opportunities for all children to participate and learn. NAEYC Fred Rogers Joint Positions Statement. Increasing literacy demands Current difficulties in reading largely originate from rising demands for literacy, not from declining absolute levels of literacy. In a technological society, the demands for higher literacy are ever increasing, creating more grievous consequences for those who fall short. 4/8/2019 2013 California Department of Education (CDE) California Preschool Instructional Network (CPIN)

6 Digital Literacy Encompasses both technology and media literacy
The pace of change is so rapid that society is experiencing a disruption almost as significant as when there was a shift from oral language to print literacy, and again when the printing press expanded access to books and the printed word. The shift to new media literacy's and the need for digital literacy that encompasses both technology and media literacy will continue to shape the world in which young children are developing and learning (Linebarger & Piotrowski 2009; Flewitt 2011; Alper n.d.). -Digital citizenship is an important part of digital literacy for young children. Digital citizenship in the context of early childhood programs refers to the need for adults to help children develop an emerging understanding of the use, misuse, and abuse of technology and the norms of appropriate, responsible, and ethical behaviors related to online rights, roles, identity, safety, security, and communication. Encompasses both technology and media literacy Is an important ability for both children and adults Has a rapidly increasing need 4/8/2019 2013 California Department of Education (CDE) California Preschool Instructional Network (CPIN)
