1 Ruth Lineage of Jesus The Redeemer
Look At The Book! Ruth Lineage of Jesus The Redeemer

2 Good People In Bad Times
In Ruth we see that even in the worst of times there are good and righteous people who remain faithful to God. The account of Ruth highlights these things in a delightful love story which results in blessings on all involved. It also furthers our knowledge of the genealogy of Jesus the Christ.

3 Setting Important To The Event
To more fully appreciate the content of Ruth, we need to notice some of the setting. Ruth 1:1 --Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons.

4 Things To Notice Takes place in and around Bethlehem
Same location as Judges 19 In Ephrathah, or Bethlehem Genesis 35:19 – “So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is Bethlehem).” Micah 5:2 – “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.”

5 Sojourn In Moab Judges 3: He said to them, “Pursue them, for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hands.” So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross. They struck down at that time about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped.”

6 Bad Times In Moab Elimelech dies
Followed in premature deaths of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion. Leaves Naomi and her two daughters-in-law on their own. She returns to Bethlehem and Ruth chooses to remain with her.

7 Naomi, Ruth, And Boaz The book follows the fortunes of these three individuals. Naomi means PLEASANTNESS Ruth 1: She said to them, “Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has witnessed against me and the Almighty has afflicted me?” MARA means BITTER

8 But a couple of chapters later…
Ruth 4: Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed is the Lord who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name become famous in Israel. May he also be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse.” From MARA back to NAOMI -- what happened?

9 Ruth the Loyal Daughter-in-law
Ruth 1:16-17 – “But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus may the Lord do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.”

10 Ruth’s Faithfulness Well Known
Ruth 2:11 – “Boaz replied to her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband has been fully reported to me, and how you left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and came to a people that you did not previously know.”

11 Boaz Smitten With Ruth Shows in his acts of kindness
Ruth 2:8-9 – “Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen carefully, my daughter. Do not go to glean in another field; furthermore, do not go on from this one, but stay here with my maids. Let your eyes be on the field which they reap, and go after them. Indeed, I have commanded the servants not to touch you. When you are thirsty, go to the water jars and drink from what the servants draw.”

12 Shown In His Protective Gestures
Ruth 2:15-16 – “When she rose to glean, Boaz commanded his servants, saying, “Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not insult her. Also you shall purposely pull out for her some grain from the bundles and leave it that she may glean, and do not rebuke her.”

13 Under The Wings Of God Ruth 2:12 – “May the Lord reward your work, and your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.” WINGS = KANAPH

14 Ruth In Love With Boaz Concern: How does an older man let a younger woman know he’s interested in her? How does a younger woman let the older man know she’s interested in him? He does nice and generous things for her. She…well….she follows her mother-in-law’s suggestions on how to secure his attentions.

15 The Plan Ruth 3: Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you? Now is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maids you were? Behold, he winnows barley at the threshing floor tonight. Wash yourself therefore, and anoint yourself and put on your best clothes, and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. It shall be when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies, and you shall go and uncover his feet and lie down; then he will tell you what you shall do.”

16 The TOTAL MORALITY Of It All
Ruth 3:9 – “He said, ‘Who are you?’ And she answered, ‘I am Ruth your maid. So spread your covering over your maid, for you are a close relative.’” COVERING = KANAPH Ruth 3:10-12 – “Then he said, ‘May you be blessed of the Lord, my daughter. You have shown your last kindness to be better than the first by not going after young men, whether poor or rich. Now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you whatever you ask, for all my people in the city know that you are a woman of excellence. Now it is true I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer than I.’”

17 The Redeemer Widows could (and should) be redeemed by a close relative, should no brothers of the deceased husband be alive. Boaz was close, but one other was closer. He gave the other relative the chance to fulfill his obligation, and when he declined, Boaz was free to redeem Ruth, and her family property. The right of redemption was satisfied and Ruth became the wife of Boaz and bore him a son.

18 Jesus Our Redeemer Ephesians 1:7-8 – “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.”

19 The Lineage Of The Christ
Ruth 4:16-22 – “Now these are the generations of Perez: to Perez was born Hezron, and to Hezron was born Ram, and to Ram, Amminadab, and to Amminadab was born Nahshon, and to Nahshon, Salmon, and to Salmon was born Boaz, and to Boaz, Obed, and to Obed was born Jesse, and to Jesse, David.”
