Excel Activity -Bar Graph -Change Bar Colors

2 Did you Know? Astronomers have determined 7 basic star colors and their associated temperatures to help them determine the stage of life that a star is in, along with its approximate age. Astronomers use degrees Kelvin to measure star temperature. The freezing point of water equals 273 degrees Kelvin.

3 Create a Spreadsheet Open a new workbook document in Excel.
Type Star Color in cell A1. Change to bold. A2 Red A3 Orange A4 Light Orange A5 Yellow A6 Yellow Green A7 White A8 Blue

4 Click in cell A2 and go to the Format menu
Click in cell A2 and go to the Format menu. Select Cells and click on the Font tab. Click on the small arrow located to the right side of the Color box and select a red color. Click OK. Change the rest of the font colors to match the word except leave the word White in black print. Center all of column A. Adjust the column width so all the labels are readable.

5 Column B Type Temperature (degrees K) in cell B1 and change it to bold typeface. B B B B B B B Center the data in column B.

6 Create a Cluster Column Chart
Highlight cells A2-B8 and select the Chart Wizard. Select the Cluster Column Chart. Title the chart Color and Temperature of Stars Title the x axis Star Color and the y axis Temperature (degrees K) Save as a New Sheet and Click Finish.

7 Format the Data Double click on the Blue Star bar.
Select the Patterns tab. Select a blue color from the box under the “area” section. Click OK. Change the rest of the bar colors to match the word.
