Friday 12/14/18 Bell Ringer: What does it mean to classify? You may find the answer in your two column notes you made for last night’s homework.

Friday 12/14/18 Bell Ringer: What is 1 thing the animals below have in common? What are 2 things they do not all have in common?

Classifying = organizing objects and events into groups based on their details.

Why would I classify? Easily find information about a group of objects. Analyze data to show relationships or connections

Food Pyramid

How could we classify food?

Tips to help you classify
Make careful observations of similarities and differences Use similarities and differences to make groups Decide if a large group can be broken into smaller groups.

Let’s Classify: Part 1 Animals
Simple classification system – separate the animals into two groups. Give a name to each group based on the main feature of the group. Classify (list the names of the animals) into each group. Animals

Let’s Classify: Part 2 Complex classification system – separate the animals into 3 to 5 groups. No animals can fit in two or more groups. Give a name to each group based on the main feature of the group. Classify (list the names of the animals) into each group. Animals

Let’s Classify: Part 3 Complex classification system– create a system with two levels with different groups in each level. You can use one of your systems from parts 1 and 2 or develop a new system. No animals can fit in two or more groups. Give a name to each group based on the main feature of the group. Classify (list the names of the animals) into each group. Animals Animals

Exit Questions Suppose that you are designing a zoo. Your goal is prepare exhibits that will be easy to maintain and safe for the animals. Would you use any of your classification systems from Parts 1-3? Explain why or why not? Which of the classification system that you made would help you identify the most connections or relationships between the animals? Explain.
