Germany and Hip-Hop By: Kendall M., Zachary F., Adi V., and Austin G.

2 Hip Hop as a form of Art and Politics
ART FORM Hip hop is the norms of creativity and visuals as an expression to conduct a message that brings mix emotions Hip-hop became important in Germany and defined as a new identity They find different ways to express their feelings through different methods, especially through hip-hop POLITICS IN GERMANY Politics in America at times can be differently expressed than in Germany Sido is known for his politically controversial lyrics

3 The Global Imprint of Hip Hop
Hip Hop has grown as a culture that encourages and integrates practices of artistic expression Constructs identity, race, socialization, and community Many people don’t want problems on the streets, many singers make songs expressing what they feel and make a song out of their feelings

4 Why was immigration the cause of hip-hop to be noticed by others in Germany?
“By the early ’90s, Turkish-German, the country’s largest minority, became a powerful voice in German hip-hop. German-Turkish rap essentially came into being in the 1990’s as a direct correlation with the rise of anti-immigrant feelings in Germany and violent attacks upon Turkish immigrants in the country. Hip-hop quickly became a voice for this marginalized sector of German society and consequently the number of Turkish-German rappers has multiplied vastly”(Dautenhahn).

5 How does global Hip-Hop inform us about systems of power and Western hegemony?
German Hip-Hop has largely been influenced by the U.S. through popular culture and the U.S. military starting in the 1980s Youth of color and immigrant youth saw what African-Americans had done with Hip-hop and adopted it as their own As a result, Hip-hop informs us how other Western powers oppress their own people “In terms of access to popular music from the USA, Frankfurt is especially privileged by being the home of American Forces Network (AFN), the Radio and TV channels established to serve US Army personnel stationed in Germany” (Bennett 81).

6 Sido Name translates to “Super intelligent drug victim”
Wore a Skull Mask until 2004 Moved from the East side of the Berlin Wall to the West side Was beaten during his youth for being as Ossi Kept being from his origins a secret in fear of being bullied First record label at Royal Bunker Transferred to Aggro Berlin record label

7 Lyrical Career Although his music was very provocative many fans take his aggressive lyrics as satirical on widespread prejudices about the life in so-called “problem districts” “Mein Block” = “My Block” “Hey Du!” = “Hey You”

8 “Hey Du!” This song was used to reveal his East background.
He focuses largely on the discrepancies for youth between the East and West side of the Berlin Wall. In one of Sido’s videos, he was dressed in all white, and was placed as an overlay over the Fall of the Berlin Wall footage on its 20th anniversary. “Because a boy from the East wasn't really hot in the West I received beatings for my family background nearly every day And since then I swore to myself to make a secret out of it So that my Homies had no reason to laugh about me Why I tell you this now, I do not exactly know Probably because you just look this way with your tearful eyes But I believe under the water there's a face which is nice I hope this song wipes away your tears, listen!”

9 Why was Sido’s rap music so
aggressive and provocative in his lyrics in the beginning of his career, and then decided to begin writing lyrics that were less harsh?

10 Where is Sido positioned in Hip-Hop if it is considered neutral?
Sido's subject personality is one of growth and change within Hip-Hop Starting as a controversial artist Now leading towards voice of authority and agency in political lens for youth "Thus Sido wants to be understood: as an artist in the tension between nihilism and participation, as a residential block bard option on single-family house. ‘I stand between the worlds,’ he says with a straight face. 'I can not just go to the ghetto, get to without problems. I am now the rich guy you would most like to pull off. And in my new area people say not even good day to me'" (Hass).
