3 The FIRST Tech Challenge FTC is designed for those who want to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments. 2012 FTC FIRST University Day Kickoff

4 FTC Team Members: Design, build, and program robots Apply real-world math and science concepts Develop problem-solving, organizational, and team-building skills Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments Earn a place in the World Championship Qualify for nearly $9.7 million in college scholarships 2012 FTC FIRST University Day Kickoff

6 FTC Season Timeline - 1 A Full Year of the FIRST Tech Challenge Pre-season - through August Pre-season Attend a tournament to observe Plan, budget, recruit, fundraise Register your team Order your Tetrix kit and additional parts Become conversant with programming and Tetrix building environments Attend training and workshop sessions, where available 2012 FTC FIRST University Day Kickoff

7 FTC Season Timeline - 2 Kick-off - early September Kick-off Attend kick-off event Start studying the new FTC Challenge!FTC Challenge Build and Practice Season - continues until competitions are over Build and Practice Season Study the Challenge and Brainstorm! Check Teams and Events in your area to planTeams and Events Attend training and workshop sessions, where available Use the FTC on-line resources! The Cycle - Brainstorm, Design, Build, Test, Practice - repeat as needed! Participate in Scrimmages where available 2012 FTC FIRST University Day Kickoff

Qualifiers lead to State Championships World Championship Top teams from Championships are invited to compete in St. Louis!
