Trench Warfare By Joshua Ayers

Enemy problems The main cause of the many casualties in the Great War, were caused by numerous new weapons and military tactics.

Weaponry The main weapons developed in the war were machine guns, chemical gases, and large mortars to bombard the enemy with.

Problems of the Trenches
The rats were by far the worst threat to the soldiers because of how they spread disease and grew fat on the corpses in the trenches.

Parasites The most common was head-lice which caused most soldiers to shave their heads to avoid nits as well. They also spread the Trench Fever which plagued the soldiers.

Continued There were also horned beetles and slugs which crawled along the trench boundaries. They were not the major source of disease, but it does show how filthy and damp the conditions must have been.

The Outcome The total death rate from chemical weapons, gunfire, and disease on both sides ranged from 1,000 to almost one half a million casualties. This proved to be one of the most devastating wars of it’s age.
