ACS PRF# G10 Composition and Electrocatalytic Property of Pt-Ni Alloy or Pt-Au Bimetallic Nanoparticles Hong Yang, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York Platinum-containing alloys are preferred catalysts in low-temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Such fuel cells are considered as one of the technological solutions to meet the national and global needs on clean energy and can potentially be used to replace fossil fuel-based combustion engines in the automobile industry. During the recent funding cycle, we have aimed at the generation of PtNi alloy and Pt-Au bimetallic nanoparticles and examination their electrocatalytic properties. Our results indicate that PtNi nanoparticles can be highly active in methanol oxidation and the reactivity heavily depend on the composition; while Pt-Au bimetallic catalysts do not show the expected improvement in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Effect of composition of Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles on direct oxidation of methanol Polarization curves and TEM images of bimetallic platinum on gold catalysts
