2. Before Calculating GWAM
Before calculating your GWAM you will need to know:
How many words you typed
How many minutes will you type

3. Count the Number of Words
Every five characters equals one word.
A character can be a:
Letter
Number
Symbol
Space

4. Calculate GWAM To calculate the GWAM
Divide the number of words by the number of minutes timed.

5. Practice Counting Words
How many words are in the following sentences?
The boy ran and jumped over the water puddle.
9 words (45 keystrokes/5characters = 9)
The girl is taller than her younger sister.
8 words (43 keystrokes/5 characters = 8) Drop the remaining characters

6. Practice Calculating GWAM
If you type the following sentences for 3 minutes:
The boy ran and jumped over the water puddle.
9 words (45 keystrokes/5 characters = 9)
9 words divided by 3 minutes = 3 GWAM
The girl is taller than her younger sister.
8 words (43 keystrokes/5 characters = 8)
8 words divided by three minutes= 2 GWAM

7. Practice Calculating GWAM
If you type the following sentences for 5 minutes:
The boy ran and jumped over the water puddle.
9 words (45 keystrokes/5 characters= 9)
9 words divided by 5 minutes = 1 GWAM
The girl is taller than her younger sister.
8 words (43 keystrokes/5 characters= 8.6)
8 words divided by 5 minutes = 1 GWAM
