1 Module 10: Lesson 10.3 Modeling Exponential Growth and Decay

2 End Behavior of a Growth Function
What happens as x increases/decreases for each? Try an x-value of 100 and -100. Which model exponential growth and which model exponential decay. An asymptote is a line the graph approaches or gets closer and closer to as x either increases or decreases. What is the asymptote for this graph? Predict the y-intercept. What is the domain, range, and end behavior for each? Why does the function never equal zero?

8 Modeling Exponential Growth
A painting sells for $1,800 and its value increases by 11% every year. What will the painting be worth in 30 years? A baseball card sells for $2 and the value of the card goes up 8% every year. What will the card be worth in 10 years? The population of Haggardtown in 2015 was 55,126. If the population of the town increases by 4% every year, what do yopu expect the population to be in 2050?

9 Modeling Exponential Decay
The value of a car depreciates by 5% per year. If the car was bought for $32,000 in 2010, what will the value of the car be in 2013? The value of a boat depreciates by 9% per year. If the boat was bought for $17,800 in 2006, what will the value of the boat be in 2013?
