USABILITY PART of UX
2
The more complex your product is the more usability testing you need to do.
3
don’t worry !!!
4
5 usability components (Nielsen & Loranger,2006)
5
Learnability how easily can users accomplish basic tasks the first time they encounter a specific information service or product? for instance, can all the features and functions be used by new and novice users effectively
6
Learnability Predictability
Menu v.s command shell
7
Learnability Synthesizability
8
Learnability Familiarility
really relevant to first impressions
9
Learnability Generalizability
10
Learnability Consistency
11
Efficiency how quickly can users accomplish the tasks they are expected to perform with a given information product or service
12
Memorability If a user has spent some time away from your design and then return to it, how quickly can they reestablish proficiency. If the design is intuitive then the relearning time should be small.
13
Errors Next is up are the errors
Errors Next is up are the errors. Tracking how many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how easily can they recover from the errors can help you determine the pain points within your design.
14
Satisfaction This is my personal favorite
Satisfaction This is my personal favorite. Determining how pleasant the design is to use can make a difference on whether or not users come back to it.
15
USEFUL = UTILITY + USABILITY
16
Quantitative vs. Qualitative Usability Testing
17
Qualitative (qual) data,
consisting of observational findings that identify design features easy or hard to use
18
Qualitative data offer a DIRECT ASSESSMENT of the usability of a system: researchers will observe participants struggle with specific UI elements and infer which aspects of the DESIGN are PROBLEMATIC and which WORK WELL
19
Quantitative (quant) data,
in form of one or more metrics (such as task completion rates or task times) that reflect whether the tasks were easy to perform
20
KNOWING that only 40% of the participants are able to complete a task doesn’t say why users had trouble with that task or how to make it easier.
21
Why You Only Need to Test with 5 Users (Jakob Nielsen,2000)
As you add more and more users, you learn less because you will keep seeing the same things again and again. There is no real need to keep observing the same thing multiple times, and you will be very motivated to go back to the drawing board and redesign the site to eliminate the usability problems
22
ITERATIVE DESIGN Jakob Nielson, 2000
23
So why recommend testing with a much smaller number of users?
The curve shows that you need to test with at least 15 users to discover all the usability problemsin the design. So why recommend testing with a much smaller number of users? ITERATIVE DESIGN Jakob Nielson, 2000
24
The ultimate user experience is improved much more by 3 studies with 5 users each than by a single monster study with 15 users.
