3 PFLAG RESOUCES The You Tube "It Gets Better" Project- Dan Savage started the It Gets Better Project. GLBT people from all walks of life, some famous, some not, tell their storys of how it was hard when they were younger, but how it does get better when they get older. Children and teens who are struggling with their own identities can find comfort from these stories in which people reveal how it DOES get better.   Family Acceptance Project (FAP) is a community research, intervention, education, and policy initiative that is affiliated with San Francisco State University. FAP is the only project of its kind, that studies how family acceptance and rejection affects the health, mental health, and well-being of LGBT youth. Dr. Caitlin Ryan, PhD, ACSW is the director.  Family video can be viewed.  Best practice family booklets in English, Spanish, Chinese and Mormon versions.

4 Youth groups Beacon is a welcoming environment for queer youth  and allies ages to engage in socialization, education, exploration, and activism.  We meet every Monday night from 5:30 - 7:30pm.  Meetings are currently being held at the Topeka Shawnee County Library.  Check us out on facebook (facebook.com/beaconks) and on tumblr (beaconyouthgroup.tumblr.com), or call Lawrence Queer Youth Voice is a youth-led organization that connects with members by facebook.  The page is "Queer and trans of Lawrence Kansas". Kansas Queer Youth Network is the statewide GSA Network that is affiliated with the National Association of GSA Networks.  We work to connect youth with resources and community and to build the queer youth movement in Kansas.  For more information on how to get involved, check Facebook or

5 Support Groups  Topeka Transgender Alliance (TTA) - TTA is a support group for the transgender (crossdressers, dual gendered, Intersexed, and transsexuals) community in the Topeka, KS area. They invite guest speakers to present topics of intrest to the Transgender community. The only qualifications to belong to the group is a small interview process.  web site: TopekaTransgenderalliance.org  Meetings are 2nd Sunday at MCC of Topeka, 6:30 pm

6 Advocacy Organizations
 Equality Kansas is a unified statewide group of fair-minded people who are determined to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We seek to ensure the dignity, safety and legal equality of all Kansans.  Kansas Equality Coalition of Topeka, Inc. works to secure fair treatment for all citizens, especially with regard to sexual orientation and gender identity. We recognize the interconnectedness of all forms of oppression and we seek alliances with other organization to combat racism, sexism, homophobia, and all other forms of oppression.   Kansas Statewide Transgender Education Project (K-STEP) provides a panel of transgender educators to groups who request their services. K- STEP has presented to departments of corrections, mental health care providers, social organizations, and many more diverse groups. Their goal is to put a human face on a population that is sometimes feared and is generally misunderstood.

 Positive Connections(formerly Topeka AIDS Project (TAP): Become a "Fan" on the TAP Facebook page SW Fillmore St, Topeka   NetworQ’s mission is to support, educate, and serve the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered community, their friends, families, and allies. NetworQ will raise awareness for social, economic, cultural, health, educational and political issues affecting the people of Lawrence and Douglas County, Kansas.

8 Counseling Services  Headquarters Counseling Center provides services directly to individuals, with Headquarters receiving approximately 20,000 counseling contacts a year over the telephone and in person. Among the services provided are:Counseling and support for all personal concerns, such as family problems, stress, loneliness, relationship difficulties, depression, abuse, sexuality issues, alcohol or other drug problems Suicide intervention for anyone who is having suicidal feelings; guidance and support to those who are concerned about a family member or friend who is feeling suicidal (Certified by the American Association of Suicidology)  First Call for Help for people seeking any kind of help or community resources including financial matters, housing, food, legal problems, and health concerns
